FAA-certified aircraft dispatchers…

towerThey’re not air traffic controllers, pilots, meteorologists, mechanics or navigators. So who are they and what do they do?

A career as an aircraft dispatcher just may be the best aviation job you haven’t heard of. Dispatchers have a number of different responsibilities, including:

  • Planning flight and fuel schedules
  • Checking aircraft performance, weight and balance
  • Assisting with passenger loading
  • Monitoring other flight factors such as weather, runways and airport logistics
  • They also hold an FAA airmen certificate.
  • Flamingo Air’s Airline Ground Schools, located at Cincinnati, Ohio’s historic Lunken Airport, offers an Aircraft Dispatcher certification course that is designed specifically for working adults.

There is current demand for this profession. Every commercial flight must have a dispatcher. And all dispatchers who work for a Part 121 air carrier (commercial, scheduled airlines such as Delta) must hold an FAA dispatcher certificate. Part 91 (corporate) and Part 135 (charter) carriers do not require a certificate to work as a dispatcher.

There are many benefits to having a career as an FAA-certified aircraft dispatcher:

  • Starting annual salaries range between $40,000 and $60,000
  • Work schedules are flexible
  • Dispatchers receive flight perks from the airline in which they work
  • They receive discounts on other airlines, hotels and car rentals
  • The airlines offer great insurance plans, retirement plans and other benefits
  • In addition, being part of an exciting industry like aviation allows you to work in a challenging, but rewarding environment with many opportunities for advancement.

The Aircraft Dispatcher distance-learning program at Flaming Air requires 200 hours of coursework. However, 152 of those hours can be completed online, from home. The last 48 hours are completed at an Airline Ground Schools campus, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, or Miami, Florida.

Airline Ground Schools is the quickest, most economical way to become an FAA-certified aircraft dispatcher. More information on the course can be found at www.flamingoair.net.
